Amy R. Stein practices in the areas of municipal law, family law, personal injury, and criminal defense.
Amy has served as legal counsel for the New Albany City Council since 2017. In that role, she drafts legislation for council members and helps answer their questions regarding procedure and applicable laws.
In addition to divorce and custody cases, Amy represents children who have been abandoned by one or both parents who need a custodian appointed and who may qualify for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. She accepts appointments as Guardian Ad Litem to investigate and represent the best interest of children in custody cases.
She is also well versed in personal injury representation. Making sure the firm’s personal injury clients are fairly compensated is her priority.
Amy received her juris doctorate from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law in 2009. She started at Stein Law and then worked as a deputy prosecutor in Harrison County, Indiana from 2011-2013. She returned to Stein Law in 2013 and has been here since. She is licensed in both Indiana and Kentucky. The firm’s founder, Nick Stein, is her father.
Amy is originally from New Albany and went to college at Earlham College in Richmond, IN where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development and Social Relations and a minor in Spanish. She learned Spanish through a semester in Spain and then a month of intense study in Argentina while awaiting her bar exam results. While not fluent in Spanish, she uses it every day in helping her Spanish speaking clients with their family law cases or criminal defense, such as driving without a license. She worked for the Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana for five years between college and law school.
Amy is a member of Citizen’s Climate Lobby New Albany, where she passionately participates in advocacy efforts to get climate legislation passed through Congress. She loves all things outdoors, including tending her vegetable garden and kayaking. She has hiked the entire 58 miles of Indiana’s Knobstone Trail and many hikes in New England’s White Mountains, including Mount Washington. She has seen nearly every movie in the never-ending Star Wars franchise thanks to her husband and son.
